In North Carolina, we have a process in place to encourage lots of practice. The learner permit stage is an opportunity for you to help your teen become a safe driver.

The GDL period is designed to provide at least 9 months of supervised driving*, which allows teens to learn and practice driving skills across several seasons and during a lot of weather and lighting conditions.

Within this practice period, teens must log at least 60 hours of supervised practice (see the Understanding GDL section for more information).

That sounds like a lot, right? In fact, over the course of a 9 month learner period, that only comes out to less than two hours a week! Of course, more practice is always better, so think of this as a starting point.
