This is a lot to think about during your teen’s first few days and weeks behind the wheel. The goal of having an extended practice period is that you can take it slowly, starting with empty parking lots and slow, low-traffic streets, then gradually moving up to harder situations when you’re both ready.

Take your time, build skills slowly, and refer to the Sharing your Wisdom section of this site to learn some tips about how to communicate with your teen!

How will you know when your teen is ready to get their intermediate license? We’ve developed a helpful tracking tool. This tool can help you keep track of your teen’s progress and identify areas where they’re skilled and areas they need more practice. When you’re comfortable with their skills in all areas you might consider letting them take their license test.
